Turkey’s authorities have detained two British citizens of Iraqi origin on charges of disseminating terrorist propaganda, the Turkish state-run media reported on Friday.
Two brothers Ayman Barzan and Hariam Barzan were detained by police in the Western city of Dalaman at the airport after being questioning.
The detention took place after police examined the brothers’ social media accounts where they shared posts positive and praising the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is outlawed in Turkey, and Syrian People’s Protection Units (YPG), a militia that Ankara views affiliated with the PKK.
No further details were released by the authorities.
The PKK has been fighting the Turkish state to carve up an autonomous zone in southeastern Turkey for self-rule. It is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and E.U.
