Report: Nearly 15,000 Civilians Take Shelter in Afrin After Turkish Offensive

Around 15,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) have reportedly arrived in the northwestern Syrian town of Afrin, seeking refuge since Jan. 20, an international watchdog said on Tuesday.

According to a report by ReliefWeb, a humanitarian information source that provides digital service to U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the number of people flooding to Afrin from the countryside and the border areas has increased.

“But there is no monitoring mechanism or registration process to verify the exact number of IDPs in the area,” it added with a caveat.

Turkey has launched an offensive against Kurdish militia People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Afrin on Jan. 20.
