Ankara to Name UAE Embassy’s Street After Ottoman Governor

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality have taken steps to name a street where United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy is located after an Ottoman commander over whom the two countries plunged into a diplomatic spat.

Turkish Foreign Ministry recently summoned a top UAE diplomat in Ankara after UAE Foreign Minister shared a tweet accusing Ottoman Governor and Commander Fahreddin Pasha and his troops of stealing money, manuscripts from Medina during First World War.

The tweet ignited a fiery reaction from the Turkish leaders, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calling Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed al Nahayan to “know your place.”

State-run Anadolu news agency reported that the municipality decided to rename 613th street in Cankaya district as Fahreddin Pasha street.

The commander served as governor of Medina from 1916 to 1919 during the final days of the Ottoman Empire.
