Only Two Turkish Universities Make List of World’s Top 500 Universities

Turkey entered this years’ list of top 500 universities in the world with only two of its institutions, according to London-based weekly magazine Times Higher Education (THE), down from five universities that made the list last year.

THE, known as the U.K.’s leading publication on higher education, listed a total of 1,258 universities under the title “World University Rankings 2019“.

23 Turkish universities are included in the full list, while only two, Sabanci University and Koc University -both private universities-, made the top 500. Sabanci ranked in the 351-400 band and Koc was in the 401–500 band.

In the last year’s ranking, 22 universities from Turkey were in the whole list, and five of those were among the top 500. Bilkent University, Atilim University and Bosphorus (Bogazici) University, which were among the first 500 last year, could not enter the list this year.

The first 10 spots, which were taken by the U.K. and the U.S., are respectively as follows: University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Imperial College London and University of Chicago.

Out of the first 10, seven are American universities and three are from the U.K., as the latter has been holding the first two spots over the past two years.

Meanwhile, it was noted that China has become home to the top institution in Asia for the first time, with Tsinghua University overtaking the National University of Singapore to become the best university in the continent.
