Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkey will take a U.N. Security Council resolution, which was vetoed by the U.S. on Monday, to the U.N. General Assembly for another vote.
“The Jerusalem resolution proposed at the U.N. was vetoed by the U.S. Now will take the resolution to the U.N. General Assembly,” the Turkish president said.
On Monday, the U.S. vetoed U.N. Security Council resolution, calling for U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to be withdrawn, deepened the division between Washington and the rest of the world. In early December, President Donald J. Trump moved to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, igniting a regional fury and backlash.
He invited all members of the U.N. to defend the historic status of Jerusalem. He said he will be dealing with the matter to the end.
Last week, President Erdogan took the lead in gathering an Islamic summit to denounce the U.S. move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. At the end of the summit in Istanbul, the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called for recognition of East Jerusalem as the occupied territory of a Palestinian State.
On Monday, Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. the U.S. veto of U.N. Security Council resolution and said it regrets over the U.S. veto.
