Turkey Mulls Opening Embassy in Palestine Once It Recognized by World

Turkey plans to open an embassy in the eastern part of Jerusalem, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, once the world recognizes an independent Palestinian state.

A day after Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called for the “recognition of East Jerusalem as the occupied capital of Palestine,” Turkish authorities signaled that they may consider opening an embassy in Palestine.

The minister underscored the existence of serious determination and will among countries, which have yet to recognize Palestine as an independent state.

Speaking at a joint press conference along with Malta Foreign Minister Carmelo Abela, Mr. Cavusoglu again criticized the U.S. for its unilateral action in evident disregard of the U.N. Security Council resolutions.

“The decisions we made are in lines with United Nations resolutions. We have not taken decisions that disregard them like the U.S,” he said. “Therefore, we will make every effort to ensure that the independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem its capital, by countries, which have not yet recognized it as such.”

“We need to achieve this. ” Turkey’s top diplomat said. “Once we succeed, embassies will open in East Jerusalem, the capital of independent Palestinian State, accordingly.”

Final communique of OIC summit declared East Jerusalem as the occupied capital of Palestinian State and called on the world to do so.
