Interior Minister Says Over 48,000 Arrested in 2017 Over Gulen Links

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 48,305 people were arrested, while three times more detained over “FETO” links in 2017, adding that the operations against members of Gulen Movement would continue unabated in the new year.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the interior minister offered a detailed overview of the government actions taken since a botched coup attempt.

More than 150,000 people have been sacked by government decrees during the state of emergency. The government blames U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen and his movement for the attempted coup.

Both the cleric and his sympathizers deny any link to the putsch. Arrest campaign against suspected and perceived Gulen followers continue unabated.

On Tuesday, 31 military officers have been detained in nationwide crackdown over alleged Gulen links. Over the week of the new year, more than 300 people have been detained in the crackdown against Gulen Movement.
