Report: Turkey’s Erdogan May Visit Vatican in February

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would meet with Pope Francis in the Vatican in February, the Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

According to media, President Erdogan plans to discuss with Pope Francis the contested city of Jerusalem after U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s decision to recognize it as Israel’s capital touched off a lasting controversy.

Turkey swiftly condemned the move and assembled a summit of Muslim countries in Istanbul in December to forge an accord calling on “the world to recognize East Jerusalem as the occupied capital of Palestinian State.”

The Vatican also appeared as critical of the Trump’s decision.

Later, Turkey and Yemen moved to draft a resolution that was accepted by the majority in the United Nations General Assembly, calling for the reversal of the U.S. move. There is no immediate confirmation of the planned visit from the presidential office.
